The Earthway 2150 Lawn Spreader is high quality and very well liked by those who use it. It has all of the "must have" features you want in a spreader. Here are a few tips that will make your using the Earthway 2150 or any other spreader even better!
1. Do not use your spreader to spread rock salt or powdered materials as they may damage your spreader. Lawn spreaders are designed to spread granular-type materials.
2. After you use your spreader, clean it thoroughly. Cleaning the unit each time you use it will extend the life of your unit and make it ready for the next time you need to use it. Spraying your unit's metal parts with a light oil will help prevent corrosion.
3. At least once a year, tighten all the screws and bolts on your unit.
4. Be sure and close your spreader's shut off plate before you pour any fertilizer or other material into the spreader's hopper. Otherwise, the material will just run on through the spreader and end up on the ground where the spreader is standing.
5. If your spreader provides a chart/matrix (the Earthway 2150 does) showing where to set your spreader's gauge for the material being spread, be sure and start from that point. This will save you time and money. But also recognize that a lot of different things (e.g., roughness of ground, speed at which the spreader is being pushed) can affect the spreading, and that any instructions provided are just guides. You may need to deviate somewhat from the guide depending on your own situation and based on your own experience.
6. Most spreaders that are shipped arrive disassembled. Before you start assembling your spreader read the assembly instructions completely. Taking the time to read the assembly instructions before you start will save you time in the long run. Allow plenty of time for the assembly. Having a small ruler to measure the length of the different bolts/screws will also speed up the assembly process.
7. Do not store your unit with fertilizer or garden chemicals as they may damage the spreader.
8. When purchasing a spreader, checking the length of the warranty period will give you a good idea of how well the unit is made.
9. Do not store your spreader with material still in its hopper. Empty and clean your spreader before storing it.
10. Push your spreader using a brisk walk!
11. There are a number of different patterns (e.g., declining circle, crisscross, full rate path) that you can use to spread your material. Check your spreader's operating instructions and see which pattern or patterns it recommends.
12. If you are spreading fine grass seed with your spreader, the fine grass seed may settle firmly together and clog up your spreader. If it does, just shake or jiggle your spreader and that should break up the clog.
13. Conversely, if you are spreading large grass seed and your spreader is clogging, just open your gauge setting a little more and that should eliminate the clog.
14. If your spreader has an adjustable handle, be sure and set it to the position that best "fits" for your height. Doing this will make pushing your spreader much easier! Your back and legs will thank you!
I hope that these spreader tips will make your spreading just a little bit easier!
